29 may be a little old to get into nuclear engineering.

The problem with nuclear engineering is that there are limited study options and a fixed number of reactors in the US. Until we get past our anti-nuclear fixation, career choices are kind of limited.

So when I say 29 is old, I’m just saying that because you don’t have a lot of time to mess around finding your niche, and competing with the young bucks who’ll work for next to nothing. You’ve got a real life staring you in the face.

I’d suggest a more general form of engineering where you’ll have more choices. Mechanical engineering would be a great choice. That lets you get into all areas of engineering, even nuclear, to some degree. Mechanical also seems to be “age-proof”, in that you’re not out-moded by a new technology every few years.

Not being good in algebra is going to be a major problem in your studies, though. All the following math you need to get an engineering degree relies heavily on algebra. Unless you think you can tame your algebra demon, I’d advise against following the engineering path.
